Q1 For the record, who's answering the interview?
JOHN ANTHONY GUY
Q2 What is your band's name? How did you come up with that name?
Prey on the Fallen was a band that initially was named BlackBrew, based out of Los Angeles, Ca. Both Kurt Loun and Mike Ikona had been long time friends, having worked in a band in their high school days. The name BlackBrew was dropped during the recording of our new album in favor of a more modern sounding name. It was said that it was an almost old school sounding name, and though there was some reluctance to change the name by some, eventually, the dissenting member(s) saw the light and soon embraced the name, Prey on the Fallen!
Q3 So who's in the band and what instruments do you each play?
POTF members are Kurt Loun, Mark Boras, Mike Ikona and John Anthony Guy. Kurt is vocalist; Mark Boras handles all guitar work for the band. From acoustic to electric, he is the man! Mike Ikona handles the drumming, but he also is a pretty fair guitar player, and John Anthony Guy plays bass and guitar during writing sessions.
Q4 How would you describe your sound. What makes you unique?
All bands have either copied, or taken from other bands that have come before. The Beatles to Mudvayne have all done this. POTF is basically the same, but to me, what sets us apart is our fusion of new metal to that of the past. Kurt Loun also has a voice that is definitely different, with a power that you can literally feel. Plus, I like to think that our songwriting sets us apart. Our songs are very eclectic in nature.
Q5 What bands have influenced each of you?
Once again, eclectic is the proper operative! We draw inspiration from Alice in Chains, Slipknot, Black Sabbath, Black Label Society, Nightwish, Slayer, and Megadeth. On occasion, we even draw from progressive bands such as Dream Theatre. With the new songs you will see that there is a mix of many influences.
Q6 How experienced are you on the stage, a virgin or whore?
When is comes to the stage we are definitely in the whore category! We have done many shows, and I think that I speak for the whole band in that we feel very comfortable on a stage. Heavy crowd, or a small crowd, we like to give the same energy in all shows.
Q7 How would you describe your shows?
We are a pretty high-energy act in that our music runs in a power mode, and as most any band will tell, we pick up on the energy of the crowd. Kurt, Mark, Mike and I like the interaction of a band/crowd, and with that interaction, the pace of the show, as well as the intensity, is increased.
Q8 Tell us about your favorite show and why?
One show comes to mind; A few years ago we had the opportunity to work with Gilby Clarke, a former Guns N Roses member, and his All Star Band. His band was truly stacked with ringers who included: Stephen Perkins from Jane’s Addiction, Mike Watt, Phil Campbell from Motorhead, Matt Sorum, as well a various other top shelf musicians. They were great guys, and the energy that night was killer! We rocked hard that night, as did the super band.
Q9 Tell us about your worst show and why?
One show that was a bummer was a night at the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood. It began with some heavy partying and after a bit it was time to hit the stage. During our first song of the show our former lead guitarist had stepped up on the drum riser. As the song went through the intro there is a part that is accented with a hard hit on two notes; as this happened our guitarist jumped off simultaneously, at which time both of his knees went out leaving him on the floor in great pain. It was a rough show, but he did manage to play, and finish the show! Due to the severity of his injuries, he left the band in order to recover after surgery.
Q10 Tell Us About Your Dream Show, who you'd like to play with and where?
It would be cool to play a Family Values show with Korn. Playing at the major bike rally in Laughlin would also work. Ultimately, Chowchilla would be a great venue for us to play. Our music would fit well there!
Q11 Do you have a street team and how can you join?
Under the name of BlackBrew we did have a street team, but currently, POTF has not set one up, though I think that we should.
Q12 Do you have a record label and if not are you looking for one?
As of this time, we are independent, although there has been much talk of shopping for a record label. After the first of the year we may start to look for a label, or at the very minimum, a distribution deal.
Q13 What are your plans for the future, in a year, 5 years?
Currently, we are taking off for the holidays, but as of the first of the year we will hit business with a sledgehammer! We are writing material for a new album, as well as talking about a new video. In five years; not quite sure, but I hope we are still out there pounding out POTF’s brand of metal!
Q14 Finally, do have any words on what Arm The Pit means to you?
Arm The Pit is a great forum for underground rock and bands to share links, info, but throw in the charity exposure that you give, it is a win win for people, both artists and listeners. By playing music that is edgy you give the ammunition to Arm The Pit; maybe even a mosh or two!
